AURORA | The Cherokee Trail 200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle relay teams from the Class 5A boys state swim meet that included seniors Keegan Chatham, Kadin Denner and Tim Yoon had a lot more going on than talent in the swimming pool.
All three recent graduates — who teamed up with Andrew Wilson to finish fifth in the 200 medley and with Tucker Meets to finish sixth in the 400 freestyle — in the season-ending competition at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center June 24 received Academic All-American honors for the 2020-21 season as past of a national list issued Friday by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA).
Just six boys senior swimmers from Colorado programs earned the requisite 3.75 Grade Point Average and completed the NISCA application and half of them were Chatham, Denner and Yoon, who helped the Cougars to a 12th-place team finish.
Chatham and Denner both scored in a pair of individual events, with Chatham (a Binghamton University commitment) finishing in the top five in both of his events (third in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle). Denner — who signed with Division I Cal State-Bakersfield prior to the season — took 10th in the 500 freestyle and 17th in the 200 individual medley.
Yoon swam legs on each of Cherokee Trail’s two relay teams and qualified in two individual events, though he didn’t make it into the top 20 in either.
Brighton was the only Colorado boys program to land a NISCA Team Scholar Award, as the Bulldogs were included in the Bronze category with a 3.459 GPA.
