AURORA | Police arrested an Aurora man Friday after a nearly 12-hour standoff that began after the man ran down a woman in an Aurora apartment, seriously injuring her, police said.
Pierre Jones, 39, faces charges of second-degree assault, hit-and-run, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, child abuse and domestic violence, Aurora police spokesperson Agent Kristopher McDowell said in a statement.
Officers were called about 4:20 a.m. to the Robinwood Apartments in the 18000 block of East Ohio Avenue after reports that a Ford pick-up truck had struck a pedestrian in the parking lot and left the scene.
Officers found an injured woman in the parking lot. She was taken to a nearby hospital with what police officials said were life-threatening injuries.
Police said Jones and the woman know each other.
Using city Flock cameras, police located the truck at a home in the 14000 block of East 22nd Place.
“Officers contacted family members at the address and learned that a toddler was inside the house with Jones,” McDowell said. “Officers set up an immediate entry team and were able to safely rescue the child from the house and reunite them with family members at the scene. Jones, however, was unable to be contacted.”
Police contacted local court officials to obtain an emergency search warrant.
During a two-hour wait for the warrant, police crisis team members tried to contact Jones and persuade him to surrender peacefully.
At about 3 p.m., the warrant was approved and police went inside the home.
“Jones, however, was not found inside,” McDowell said. “A short while later just before 4 p.m., Jones was brought to the Aurora Municipal Court where he surrendered and was arrested without further incident.”
Police said anyone with information can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.
