COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. | Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs is asking for help finding a cattle egret that escaped its exhibit during high winds.
Animal care manager Amy Schilz tells The Gazette (https://goo.gl/DStklF ) the foot-tall bird that flew the coop Tuesday night resembles a small heron and is white with patches of tan on its back, head and chest. People are asked to look in the top half of trees or near waterways. Or, if it’s raining, the bird could be on the ground taking shelter.
The zoo has experienced a few noteworthy disappearances in recent memory. Those include a North American river otter named Kitchi, who breached the zoo’s secondary fencing and has been at large since 2010; and a rare Indian star tortoise named Tutti, who zoo officials believe was stolen from an exhibit in 2011.
