PUEBLO, Colo. | Construction is underway on the 120-megawatt Comanche solar array in Pueblo County.
The Pueblo Chieftain reports (https://bit.ly/1E8v73s) local business and government leaders gathered Thursday for a ceremonial groundbreaking.
The array will have 450,000 photovoltaic panels on two sites near the existing coal-fired Comanche Generating Station outside Pueblo.
Officials called it the largest solar array east of the Rocky Mountains.
Xcel Energy will purchase the electricity. SunEdison is financing the project and will operate it. Broomfield-based Renewable Energy Systems Americas is the construction contractor.
SunEdison Executive Vice President Paul Gaynor said solar is important to utilities looking to expand their capacity, especially in Colorado. He said more solar projects are planned for the state.
