AURORA | Eaglecrest High School stayed in house to hire its new head track & field coach, as Mike Schmitt got the job on Thursday.
Schmitt has been the Eaglecrest football coach since the 2010 season, when he came to the school from Overland, where he also served on the track coaching staff. Schmitt takes over for Mike Preskorn, who held the top job with the Raptors for the past four years.
Eaglecrest athletic director Shane Snyder made the hire and is excited for what it could mean for it could mean for both the track and football programs.
“Mike’s been involved in track & field for some time at Overland and also in Louisiana (at Live Oak High School in Livingston Parrish, La.), so he’ll be a great asset for the kids,” said Snyder, who wants to see a growth in the girls program as well. “He’s got most of the football players out running track and throwing. I’ve been watching them train and it’s like ‘holy cow, they are getting stronger and faster.’”
Schmitt is 5-15 with the football team in two seasons since taking over for Tom Doherty.
Besides Schmitt, Alex Moore has also taken on a new coaching role at Eaglecrest. Moore has coached a variety of sports over the past few years and will now head the girls basketball program, which Clint Daly coached for the past three seasons. The Raptors will also have a new coach on the softball diamond in the fall, as former Rangeview head coach Yvette Hendrian took over the program from Mark Siemer.
Eaglecrest is still in search of a new head boys lacrosse coach.
