GATEWAY (SPRING 2024)
GIRLS SOCCER: The girls soccer team had a historic season from the first game of the year, which was a 1-0 win over Hinkley, which hadn’t lost to Gateway in at least 15 years, while coach Karen Macleish’s Olys would finish the regular season with just two losses to Adams City. They qualified for the Class 4A state playoffs and dropped the program’s first postseason contest in at least two decades to No. 2 Northfield to finish 12-3-1. Seniors Kee Awi and Maria Herrera along with sophomore Ruth Salazar were picked to the All-Colorado League first team, while junior Dayanara Vazquez and freshman Angely Rodelo Acevedo were second team honorees.
GIRLS GOLF: History also occurred in girls golf, as senior Maddie Dossey became the school’s first state tournament qualifier since 2012 when she earned an individual spot in the Class 3A state tournament. She played one round, but did not complete the tournament due to graduation. Dossey was the Colorado League Player of the Year and made the all-league first team along with senior Ahnijah Dawson for coach Brian Dossey’s team.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Coach Aaron Williams’ boys volleyball team remained consistently competitive in its third varsity season with a 13-10 record, which was just one win behind the 2023 total. Senior Joseph Thomas and junior Vincent Johnson earned All-City League first team nods, while junior Meryk Wright made the second team and the honorable mention list included seniors Francisco Beltran, Vic DeGuzman and Anthony (RJ) Debrum.
BASEBALL: The baseball team earned one more win than last season as it went 9-12 with a big difference in pitching and defense. Coach Rashad Mason’s Olys (who also lost three one-run games) allowed 63 fewer runs than last season in one more game. Sophomore Heber Almeida secured an All-Colorado League first team slot, while second team distinction went to junior Angel Ferrusquia and sophomore Anthony Rubio.
TRACK & FIELD: The boys and girls track & field team did not have any state qualifiers, but found success at the Colorado League meet, where the boys placed fourth and the girls fifth in the team standings. Freshman Lyric Wynn won the boys league titles in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, while senior Leona Ferguson ruled the girls 800 and 1,600 meters.
GIRLS TENNIS: The girls tennis team finished 3-6 in dual matches and did not have any players advance to state out of the Class 4A Region 2 tournament at Kent Denver.
