AURORA | One unidentified teenager was jailed and four others were ticketed Thursday afternoon after several fights broke out at the same time at Aurora Central High School, police said.
School resource officers and other high school staff were called to break up a fight among unidentified students at about 4 p.m. at the school at 11700 E. 11th Ave., police said in a statement.
“As officers and school staff intervened, several other fights broke out simultaneously, prompting a large police response,” Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said in a statement. “Four minors were detained and issued summons for fighting before being released to their parents on scene. A fifth minor was taken to the Aurora Municipal Detention Center to be processed for assaulting a school staff member.”
One student was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of what was described as “minor injuries” the student sustained in the fighting, police said.
No other injuries among officers, staff or students were reported.
Police said charges stemming from the melee won’t be determined until Friday.
I take this as a good sign that community relations between the Department and our citizens have massively improved. After all, for years the Sentinel, defense attorneys looking to make a buck, and Phil Weisers looking to make political hay have told me in no uncertain terms that our youth and persons of color, like those who attend Central, are deathly afraid of our police and they naturally flee upon their approach and avoid the police at all cost. Now I see this is not so. I see that in fact these persons are so unconcerned with the Police that they are willing to begin fights right in front of the police fearing no consequences. Finally the healing has been achieved!
