LAKEWOOD | The Rangeview girls golf team broke its state tournament drought last season and kept it going this season.
The Raiders had two qualifiers for the Class 5A girls state golf tournament in 2012 — the first time in school history — and coach Rob Schurich had another pair made the 2013 state tournament in junior Julia Kim and sophomore Jasmine Trevizo.
Kim finished with a 94 in play at the 5A Metro-West Regional tournament Monday at Raccoon Creek Golf Course, which tied her for 10th in the tournament featuring 19 teams mostly from the Jeffco League and East Metro Athletic Conference.
Strong putting helped Kim overcome a 9 on a hole on the back nine and easily move into the field for the 5A state tournament, scheduled for May 21-22 at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.
Joining Kim will be Trevizo, who shot a 101 that put her in a three-way tie for 15th. Trevizo’s previous lowest score was a 115.
Schurich had hoped to qualify a three-player team for the first in school history, but a tough round for junior Danae Bushman kept that from happening.
Bushman, a state qualifier last season, lost a ball on one of the holes and finished with an 11. The setback derailed her round and she didn’t shoot a low enough score on the front nine to play the back nine.
Schurich found out his fourth player wouldn’t be able play to make the tournament in the morning, so the Raiders had only two scores and were one of 10 teams without a team score. Dakota Ridge won the team championship by 12 strokes over Standley Lake.
Aurora Central, Gateway and Hinkley also didn’t collect a team score.
Senior Kasydi Valentine was the only player to finish for Hinkley and shot a 111, making her the first alternate. Valentine would take the spot of any player from the Metro-West Regional unable to play in the state tournament.
Gateway sophomore Malorie Williamson fell short of a second straight trip to the state tournament, as she shot a 120 to finish 10 strokes off the pace.
