CHEYENNE, WYOMING | Mary Weinstein returned to the Girls’ Junior Americas Cup for the second year in a row and helped Team Colorado make an upward move in the standings.
The Regis Jesuit High School senior-to-be represented the state at the annual team tournament in 2014 when it finished 14th in the field of 18 teams that includes four-player squads from 12 Western states, plus Canada and Mexico.
The only holdover from last season’s team, Weinstein played five strokes better than she had the previous year, as she shot rounds of 82, 78 and 78 on the par 72, 6,179-yard course at Cheyenne Country Club, which helped Colorado finish comfortably in 10th place at the end July 30.
With Weinstein and Longmont’s Erin Sargent shooting plus-22 238 for the tournament and Gillian Vance (the Class 5A state champion) of Lakewood and Cherry Hills Village’s Caroline Jordaan each coming in at plus-17 233, Colorado finished just one stroke out of ninth (held by Washington), two out of eighth (Sun Country) and five out of the sixth-place tie between San Diego and Arizona.
For the tournament, Weinstein finished with four birdies, 30 pars, 15 bogeys, four double bogeys and a triple bogey.
Her final round included three birdies, including one on the par-5 Hole No. 12 — her opening hole — as well as one on her final hole, the par-4 Hole No. 11.
The par-3 Hole No. 2 tripped Weinstein up in all three rounds, as she played the hole at plus-5 for the tournament, including a triple bogey in the final round and a pair of bogeys in the first two rounds.
Weinstein also qualified to play in the 2015 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships along with Regis Jesuit teammates Sydney Gillespie and Jaclyn Murray, but couldn’t play as the tournament took place in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, at the same time as the Girls’ Junior Americas Cup.
Murray played with Weinstein on Team Colorado last season.
It’s been quite a summer overall for Weinstein, who finished 15th at the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego in mid-July and in June, she captured the title at the 37th annual CJGA Junior Stroke Play Championship at Heritage at Westmoor in Westminster.
