AURORA | Longtime Aurora girls basketball coach Tammi Traylor-Statewright didn’t have to leave the city to find her next opportunity on the bench.

Cherokee Trail athletic director Steve Carpenter revealed Tuesday that Traylor-Statewright — who was let go by Gateway after the 2017-18 season — has been hired to helm the Cougars.

Traylor-Statewright took over the Olys before the 2009-10 season and led the program to an 80-130 mark and five trips to the Class 5A state playoffs in those nine seasons. With an almost completely new varsity roster, Gateway finished 4-18 in 2017-18.

Jerry Austin spent the last four seasons as Cherokee Trail head coach, leading the program to a 47-50 overall record and trips to the 5A state playoffs each season. Coincidentally, the Cougars’ last postseason victory came back in 2016 against Traylor-Statewright and Gateway.

Cherokee Trail expects to return two players who were picked for the A-Town All-Star Game in senior-to-be Abbie Sparks, an All-Centennial League second team selection, and junior-to-be Destinee Paulk. Sparks and Paulk both played for Traylor-Statewright, who coached Team East in the A-Town All-Star Game.

The Cougars also expect to get a big boost from the return to health of junior-to-be Makayla Hemingway, who missed her entire sophomore season due to a major knee injury after she played to an All-Centennial League first team level as a freshman.

Cherokee Trail added its second Aurora basketball coaching veteran in a few weeks, as it welcomed in former Grandview and Vista PEAK coach Gary Childress to take over the boys program.
