AURORA | John Schultz reached triple digits in victories as a head football coach Thursday night as his Grandview football team registered a 53-7 victory over Gateway.
The Wolves (2-0) — ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Class 5A media poll — wasted little time in their all-Aurora rematch with the Olys from last season by scoring 21 points in the opening quarter at Legacy Stadium, bolstered by two long touchdown runs from junior Hayden Blubaugh, who piled up 124 yards on just nine carries.
Micah Chavez caught a touchdown pass and ran for a score, Tyler Ross rushed for two scores, Alex Reyna also scored on the ground and Luke LaFlam took an interception back to the end zone for Grandview, which won for the 14th time in its last 15 games.
Playing without standout linebacker DeAndre Shorts, who had to sit out after he was ejected in Grandview’s Week 1 win over Chaparral, the Wolves had a shut out going until Gateway (0-2) tallied in the fourth quarter on a 73-yard run by Dylan Paulsen.
Paulsen finished with 83 yards of total offense for coach Shane Ward’s Olys, who have dropped 13 straight dating back to the 2013 regular season.
Schultz became only the second head football coach in Grandview history when he was hired prior to the 2004 season to take over for Rocky Whitworth. His first season of 5-5 marked the only time in his 11-plus seasons that the Wolves haven’t finished above .500 and he has guided Grandview to double-digit wins in four seasons, including a 12-2 mark in 2007, when the Wolves won their first and only Class 5A state football championship.
The Grandview administration honored Schultz with a football after the game.
Gateway opens South Metro League play when it takes on Hinkley at Aurora Public Schools Stadium at 6 p.m. Sept. 17, while Grandview plays host to Arapahoe at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at Legacy Stadium.
