BOULDER | A scoreless tie at halftime turned into a four-goal loss for the Grandview boys soccer team in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs Wednesday night.

The 18th-seeded Wolves visited 15th-seeded Boulder in a contest played at Recht Field and played the Panthers to a scoreless deadlock after 40 minutes, only to cede two goals in just over a minute span early in the second half of what became a 4-0 loss.

Boulder (9-4-3) scored twice more in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory and earn passage into the Oct. 31 second round, where it will visit second-seeded Ralston Valley (14-0-2).

Meanwhile, coach Brian Wood’s Grandview team lost in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season since winning the 5A state championship in 2021.

The Wolves — who last played Boulder in postseason in the semifinals in 2018 — finished the season 7-6-3 overall. All six losses — one apiece to Boulder, plus No. 5 Arapahoe, No. 8 Cherry Creek, No. 12 Fairview, No. 14 Cherokee Trail and No. 21 Mountain Vista — came to 5A state tournament qualifiers and all save Mountain Vista (which lost head-to-head with Fairview) advanced to the second round.

Full results from the opening round of the 5A boys soccer state playoffs — which saw Aurora Central, Cherokee Trail and Regis Jesuit prevail among Aurora teams in action — can be found here.
