AURORA | A showdown of top 10 Class 5A football teams turned into a massive blowout for Grandview Oct. 21.
In a late night game at Legacy Stadium that saw the Wolves and visiting Doherty combine for 41 points in the opening quarter, Grandview piled up 28 of them on its way to a 65-27 rout.
Senior running back Hayden Blubaugh rushed for 193 of the Wolves’ 316 yards on the ground and scored five touchdowns, while senior quarterback Gunnar Lamphere threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as coach John Schultz’s Grandview team improved 7-1 and took the Mount Massive League lead at 3-0.
The Wolves’ defense yielded nearly 500 yards of offense to the Spartans’ quirky attack, but produced six turnovers to limit the damage on the scoreboard.
Doherty (6-2, 2-1) actually got on the scoreboard first on its second possession of the opening quarter, but it took just seconds for Blubaugh to even it up with a 40-yard touchdown run.
Blubaugh got into the end zone twice more before the end of the period — once after a Carson Mandrell interception to put Grandview ahead for good — and Lamphere hit junior Gunner Gentry with his first touchdown pass for a 28-13 edge after one quarter.
The lead swelled to 45-21 at halftime and climbed over 30 points in the third quarter.
Prentice Wilson and Cameron Cooper also had touchdown catches from Lamphere, who finished with 186 yards on just eight completions.
Grandview — which suffered its only loss to an Eaglecrest team that is still undefeated — plays Arapahoe (4-4, 2-1) Oct. 28 at Littleton Public Schools Stadium and finishes the league season against Overland (2-6, 2-1) on Nov. 4.
