Football: Overland returns to Hog Wars, takes title

Overland’s return to Hog Wars was a triumphant one on July 11.

The Trailblazers hadn’t taken part in Rangeview’s annual strength and teamwork competition for Aurora prep linemen — known affectionately as hogs — for a few years, but Seth Replogle restarted the tradition in his first year as head coach.

Replogle’s team of Amer Tipura, Eddie Jung, Anthony Childs, Malik Humphries, Santiago Medina, Aaron Charleston and MarQueice Hopkins won the final event to capture the traveling trophy for the first time at the eighth annual event, ending Gateway’s brief one-year reign.

Overland finished with 32 points, followed by Gateway’s B team with 30 and Gateway’s A team with 28 and Rangeview’s A team with 24. All four teams were tied going into the final event.

Squads from Cherokee Trail and Eaglecrest also competed, finishing 5th and 6th, respectively.

A new format hatched by Rangeview coach Dave Gonzales hastened Hog Wars this year. Teams competed in the farmer’s carry, monster tractor tire flip relay and log clean and press events simultaneously, then met up together to take their turns in a firetruck push and tug o’ war.

After Overland won the tug o’ war to take the Hog Wars title, Replogle placed a victory call to Overland athletic director Ron Garcia y Ortiz.
