DEAR EDITOR: Wildfire season looms on the horizon in Colorado. Because of the snow and rain, this winter and spring, wildfires this year will be likely be less severe compared to last. However, according to a recent article published by the Denver Post, over time we will experience increasingly severe wildfire seasons. Governor Jared Polis points to climate change as a cause and he’s right. It is estimated that anthropogenic climate change has nearly doubled the area affected by forest fire between the years of 1984 and 2015.
Representatives Crow, Degette, Neguse, and Perlmutter are taking the lead on climate action through their co-sponsorship and yes votes on the Climate Action Now Act that recently passed through the House. It’s now our senators’ turn to combat the worst impacts of climate change by supporting a similar bill in the Senate. Senator Bennett and Senator Gardner should take action. Colorado communities have no time to lose.
