LETTER: Aurora’s Elijah McClain death probe should be studied statewide

216

EDITOR: I’m proud to be a Coloradan, and I believe that we have one of the best states in this nation. With the delivery of the Aurora independent review of the circumstances surrounding Elijah McClain’s death, we have the opportunity now to also be a leader in moving the US towards equality and undoing past wrongs.

Given that the independent audit has determined that our public officials were indeed lax in their duties, I trust that Gov. Jared Polis will fully support steps to protect the health and safety of all Aurora residents, including charging the officers and paramedics involved, and beginning the process to implement the recommendations provided in the report.

Furthermore, a determination should be made as to whether these same recommendations should be disseminated across the state. Let’s not wait for another death before we begin to make the important changes statewide.

Gov. Polis can devise and implement changes, but he cannot “charge” anyone. Only district attorneys and grand juries can do that. History has shown that DAs rarely charge public servants with anything, despite evidence to the contrary. Until they say “We’re sick and tired of this crap and we aren’t going to allow it anymore,” peace officers will continue upon their merry ways. Another factor in the solution is for fellow officers to attempt to stop something they view as wrong and report it to the Chief of Police or other superior that can give it the merit which it deserves.

When these 2 things happen, there will be change, believe me.
