AURORA | Aurora Police issued a warrant for the arrest of a 17-year-old boy accused of crashing a stolen car on I-225 on March 30, killing one passenger and injuring others.

The boy faces charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and two counts of motor vehicle theft. Police did not release the teen’s identity because he is a minor, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Police said earlier that the boy driving the car did not have a driver’s license.

On March 30, five teenagers were traveling northbound on I-225, just south of East Sixth Avenue, in a stolen Kia Sorento. The driver lost control of the car, which resulted in a rollover crash. Everyone was ejected from the car.

According to the press statement, four of the five people were transported to the hospital with varying injuries. A 15-year-old girl died from her injuries, shortly after arriving at a hospital.

The Aurora Police Traffic Section is investigating the incident. They have so far determined that speed was the most significant contributing factor to the crash, according to the press statement.

Investigators are determining if alcohol, drugs and seatbelt usage may also be contributing factors.

“There were both opened and unopened alcohol containers in the vehicle,” Aurora Police Agent Matt Longshore said in a previous statement. “That will also be a part of the investigation.”

Since the crash, Aurora city council members have publicly asked state highway officials to analyze the highway where the crash occurred, as other fatal crashes have also occurred there.
