I-225 northbound at East Mississippi Avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday after a rollover crash shut down the interstate.

AURORA | Police say a 17-year-old boy without a driver’s license was behind the wheel of a a car when it crashed and rolled over early Saturday, ejecting all five teenagers in the car and killing one.

A 15-year-old girl died from injuries she sustained after she and four others were thrown from the rollover on Interstate 225 in Aurora, police said.

“Five teens were in the vehicle, which was also stolen, and all ejected,” Aurora Police spokesperson Matthew Longshore said in a statement. “Four were transported to the hospital, one was checked out on scene and released.”

On Monday, police said the driver of the car was 17-year-old boy, not identified because he is a minor.

“He was initially transported to the hospital with serious injuries,” Longshore said in a statement. “He did not have a driver’s license.”

While police have yet to determine details leading to the crash, investigators said it appears excessive speed was a factor.

“There were both opened and unopened alcohol containers in the vehicle,” Longshore said. “That will also be a part of the investigation.”

Police investigators are working with the district attorney office to make a determination on charges.

The crash occurred just after 7:30 a.m. on northbound I-225 near East Alameda Avenue. The highway was closed for several hours to accommodate an investigation and cleanup from the crash.

Police said Saturday evening that one of the teens had died. The condition of the other injured teens was not released.

  1. Please keep us posted as to the consequences that these 5 people will face. We sure don’t want them roaming free and stealing more cars and causing more crashes.
Do these youths have previous interactions with the police? Were there any guns involved? Are they gang members? Where did they steal the car?
What a fine mess these kids have made of their young lives: criminal records, medical bills, and perhaps some persistent physical injuries. I am thankful that at least the injuries were limited to themselves only and not innocent people who happened to be on the road at the time of the crash.

  2. When will criminals learn to wear seatbelts?
You can’t break the law of physics.
Released andetained by police for questioning?

  3. The City of Aurora needs to address this issue. We need to collectively come together and do something. Our community is hurting. This isn’t normal. A 15 year old is dead because they were in a stolen car. Teens are stealing cars on a regular basis thanks to social media and don’t give a damn about themselves or the person they stealing from.

My car was stolen from the parking lot of the high school I work at. I’m lucky my car recovered quickly, and wasn’t responsible for killing someone or having someone be killed in my car. But this is getting to the point where this story could have been any of us. It keeps happening.

In my case, APD has been able to identify the teen who stole my car but the teen has not been arrested and the last I was told is the teen is still stealing cars around the city. I can’t help but wonder is this the same kid? There are countless teens with the same story.

These stories are heartbreaking. Our kids are hurting… which only adds to them acting out, our laws are a joke when it comes to car theft. You shouldn’t be able to continue to commit the same crime after crime and get away with it. This is becoming common place and kids don’t get in trouble and the behavior escalates. The cops are a joke. These kids can’t think about the consequences of their actions beforehand.

We talk about wanting reform but we are setting our kids up for failure. We don’t even have a program to help better kids after committing a crime….most of them are shuffled in and out of schools, are disengaged in school, and allowed to roam the halls of school, and continue the same behavior.

I’m all about rehabilitation and reforming the criminal justice system, but we need accountability, we need common sense laws, and we also need to help these kids better their lives so they won’t continue the same behavior.

And who gets stuck with the responsibility? The car owner. Insurance doesn’t give a damn. So many of us are working so hard and barely making ends meet and you wake up and your car is gone and you can’t get to work!

I am tired of seeing the suffering. Our systems are broken. I don’t know what to do anymore.

Parents just lost a child, a child is dead, a friend is responsible for killing their friend. Im sure the schools are now working on the response. I can only imagine between the 5 teens…this death is one of many. This event should have NEVER occurred in the first plane.

Mayor Mike, APD, The sentinel, APS, CCSD, City of Aurora Government officials, residents of the Aurora Community….what are we going to do fix this problem? I love my city. I want the best for all of the residents, life is hard enough for everyone at the moment, but we need some accountability and we need to take action.

    1. “We need to collectively come together and do something.”
In reality, there is nothing that can be done.
      You can’t fix stupid.

    2. NoConsequences, you speak the sad truth. Nothing will change until we expect and hold parents and teens accountable.

      1. !00% correct. Parents and teens should be held accountable. It appears everyone want’s somebody else held accountable but themselves.Where were the parents of these kids at that early morning of the hour?

    3. Simple solution- real jail time, mandatory sentencing, no bullshit from family members saying they are the “salt of the earth”.

  4. Where is the accountability when one of them is immediately released to the guardian???? Absolutely NOTHING is learned…..only that they can do it again with no repercussions…

  5. Is anybody really surprised? Drunk teenagers joy riding in a stolen car, one of their friends is now dead and I guarantee that still won’t stop them from doing it again next weekend. They don’t care. Their parents don’t care.

  6. So.rry thathe girl died. No seatbelts worn?
No driver license does not mean he does not khow to drive. (But all of my friends and I wanted to get our driver licenses the dayve turned 16.)
Where were they before 7:30 a.m.?
I would feel absolutely horrible if I caused another’s death, especially a youngirl.
But everyone was responsible for not wearing their safety belts.
Hope that others driving on I-225 can provide witness details.

  7. Stop making excuses, if your family member is a SCUMBAG, it doesn’t mean you are, unless you defend him or her snd make excuses for their criminal acts!

  8. Whoa-Whoa-Whoa
This episode is now bringing up an interesting point of the city, APD specifically and CDOT knowing that I-225 is a problematic spot for drivers where that car crashed. A recent piece on KDVR focuses on accidents right where these kids crashed their stolen car along with five other accidents in the same place.

Watching this tells me the city knows there is a problem in the engineering and construction of that stretch of highway. And Aurora is quoted in this “Aurora Police Department is concerned” And what does the city do- what they usually do? “Their concerned” really… I would not be surprised if a lawsuit is filed by the dead girls’ parents against the city and CDOT as these two Gov. agencies priority and the consequences to defer maintenance.

    1. ^ There is nothing wrong withat area. Wife and I know it well and traverse it almost every day.
