AURORA | The Jefferson County sheriff’s office today identified a deputy wounded during an Aurora robbery earlier this week as Jose Marquez.

Marquez, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, remains hospitalized but his condition is improving, said Mark Techmeyer, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

“He’s making great strides and we are very positive about his recovery,” he said.

Before working for the Jefferson County sheriff, Marquez spent about a decade with the Summit County sheriff’s office, Techmeyer said.

Aurora police said they continue to search for one of the two suspects in Marquez’s shooting. A $6,000 reward is being offered for information on the suspect, who police described as a young black male wearing a brown coat.

The suspect managed to slip through a massive police manhunt after the shooting near Rangeview High School. A second suspect who was shot by the deputy is in custody.

The Jan. 26 shooting was reported about 7:30 p.m. at 17396 E. Adriatic Drive.  Denver police and deputies with the Arapahoe and Jefferson county sheriff’s offices assisted Aurora police with the search.

The reward includes $2,000 each from Aurora police, the Jefferson County sheriff and Metro Denver Crime Stoppers.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call Detective Matt Ingui at 303-739-6067 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters who call Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward.
