DENVER | An Aurora gang member was found guilty Friday, Dec. 18, of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
David Scott, 24, was convicted after a four-day trial in U.S. District Court in Denver. Scott was a member of the Crenshaw Mafia Gangster 104th Park Hill Blood gang, according to prosecutors.
Scott was arrested following a Dec. 31, 2012, traffic stop by Aurora police in which he and two other gang members were in a vehicle that was seen violating multiple traffic laws. When officers searched the vehicle they were in, they found a .45-caliber semi-automatic gun under his seat that later DNA tests proved that Scott’s DNA was on the weapon.
Scott had multiple felony convictions in Colorado prior to the traffic stop, including two previous unlawful possession charges from 2010 and 2013, and a felony menacing charge from 2009.
A federal grand jury in Denver indicted Scott on Jan. 27, and District Court Judge Marcia S. Krieger presided over the trial. He is due for sentencing on March 28, 2016, and faces up to 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
“Today’s guilty verdict against a violent gang member, a felon caught with a firearm, is a victory for the citizens of Metro Denver,” said U.S. Attorney John Walsh in a statement. “Thanks to the hard work of the jury in this case, who made a thorough review of the evidence, … Scott will be off the streets and our community will be safer.”
