AURORA | Everett Breniser refused to let The Hammer out of Eaglecrest’s grasp.

The senior attackman scored back-to-back goals in crunch time of Wednesday evening’s clash with rival Smoky Hill at Legacy Stadium, the second of which held up as the game-winner as the Raptors defeated the Buffaloes 12-11.

Breniser have five goals to help coach Neil McCarthy’s Eaglecrest team keep The Hammer — a traveling trophy that consists of a sledgehammer painted with the colors and logos of both schools — for a seventh year, which includes six straight victories along with the COVID-19 year when the matchup was wiped out.

Dylan Henning scored four goals, while Cody Scott and Brady Smith had three apiece for coach Logan Booth’s Smoky Hill team, which refused to go away in its quest to gain The Hammer for the first time since the 2017 season.

Eaglecrest returns to action with a 6 p.m. visit to Prairie View Friday, the same day Smoky Hill plays host to Arvada West at 8 p.m.
