AURORA | Students at Merryhill Preschool in Aurora celebrated this past Earth Day by exploring a bug’s life.

Students sporting Earth Day T-shirts learned to spread their environmental wings when they collectively released 14,000 ladybugs April 21 at Merryhill Preschool, 5678 S. Himalaya St.

Leading up to Earth Day, students learned that ladybugs serve as a natural pesticide by feeding on insects that could otherwise harm the health of gardens, trees and shrubs, according to school spokeswoman Stephanie Senkewicz. The importance of community and exploring nature at a young age is one of the tenants of Merryhill’s overall curriculum, Senkewicz said.
