AURORA | Fire officials said a woman smoking while using oxygen caused a fire that led to her death Monday morning at  Liberty Creek Apartments, 13276 E. Kansas Drive.

Firefighters were called to the apartment complex about 10:30 a.m. after reports of smoke. The blaze came from the bedroom of a single, second-story apartment, witnesses said.

A woman with severe burns was pulled from the apartment and rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead soon after, according to fire officials and scanner reports. Fire officials said the identity of the woman would be later released by the Arapahoe County coroner office.

Fire officials said it appeared the woman’s oxygen tank caught fire while she was smoking a cigarette in the apartment bedroom.

Firefighters and a resident evacuated others from the complex when the fire broke out, and two families were displaced by the fire.

Firefighters did not reveal the extent of damage to the apartment.
