DENVER | Colorado highway officials have set tolls for the new express lane on eastbound Interstate 70 in the mountains that could reach $40 for some drivers.

The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/1LNvaz8 ) rates on the 13-mile lane will adjust depending on traffic. The state High Performance Transportation Enterprise approved the rates Wednesday.

The toll lane runs from Empire to Idaho Springs.

Officials say drivers could cut down on costs by having an ExpressToll pass, which charges I-70 drivers a range of $3 to $30. Drivers without a toll pass could face rates as high as $40 because of processing fees.

The toll lane will open by the end of the year.

Drivers can also expect to see special events toll rates for the U.S. 36 Express Lanes project, which opens next year.
