GLENWOOD SPRINGS | Officials say an 18-year-old high school student has died from injuries he suffered during what police described as a car surfing incident.

The Post Independent reports (https://bit.ly/1S5AcLi ) that Garfield County Coroner Robert Glassmire says in a statement that Kyle Scholla died Saturday from injuries he suffered on April 1 after falling and striking his head.

Police say Scholla had been riding on the hood of a moving vehicle driven by a friend in a Walmart parking lot. The driver has been cited for careless driving, resulting in injury.

The incident remains under investigation.

Scholla had attended Rifle High School, where he was a member of the football team. A statement from his family on the school’s Facebook page says Scholla’s “big smile and sprit” will live on forever.
