AURORA | A man in a wheelchair was killed Thursday afternoon, May 21, when a car struck him on East Alameda Avenue.

Police said the crash happened about 3:30 p.m. at Alameda and South Moline Street, snarling traffic on eastbound Alameda for hours.

Investigators said the driver of a Chrysler 300 headed east on Alameda Avenue went unconscious “due to an unknown medical condition,” which cause the Chrysler to drive onto the south sidewalk along Alameda, where it collided with the man in a wheelchair. The vehicle continued along the roadway, after the collision with the man, until it struck a power pole.  That impact forced the Chrysler back onto Alameda Avenue — where it struck another car. The second vehicle suffered only minor damage.

Aurora police spokesman Sgt. Chris Amsler said the driver of the Chrysler stayed at the scene as police arrived, and was later taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

Investigators do not believe drugs, alcohol or speeding were factors in the crash.

Police reopened Alameda Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday night after conducting an investigation of the scene.
