GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. | An Olathe man accused of shooting a dog and cutting its throat is facing criminal charges.
The Daily Sentinel reports (https://bit.ly/1JTSwaX ) that 54-year-old Howard Mike Kelly has been released from the Montrose County Jail on $2,500 bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Aug. 3.
On Saturday, Ashlee Abeyta found her 9-month-old pit bull named Flex severely wounded. He had been shot twice and his throat was cut.
Kelly, who lives in the same neighborhood as Abeyta, told investigators he shot the dog after it snapped at his toddler niece. He has denied cutting Flex’s throat.
Flex underwent surgery on Monday and is recovering.
Kelly could be charged with a felony count of cruelty to animals and a misdemeanor count of prohibited used of a weapon.
