AURORA | Aurora’s District 2 Police Station will be moving from the Aurora Municipal Center to the building that now houses the Aurora Federal Credit Union at 6 Abilene Street.
On April 13, Aurora City Council unanimously approved a resolution that would allow the city to purchase and move District 2 Police to the Federal Credit Union building and to make improvements to the structure for $8 million.
Aurora Police Sgt. Chris Amsler, a spokesman for the department, said District 2 is running out of space in its current building at city hall, which it also shares with city police headquarters.
“For our District 2 officers, part of the District 2 area they use is the old city jail,” he said. “Some have offices the size of a closet.”
Amsler said the District 2 services and departments that would be moving to Federal Credit Union building include patrol staff, such as Police Area Representative officers, detectives, the Direct Action Response Team and the centralized traffic bureau. He said the district’s crime lab, administrative offices, its property and evidence bureau, centralized detective unit, major crimes unit and homicide and fraud units would remain on the Aurora Municipal Center
campus.
Interim Deputy City Manager Jason Batchelor said the city used some of that $8 million already to purchase the credit union building in February. He said the agreement between the city and the credit union will allow the business to remain in the building for a year until it finds another space.
Amsler said District 2 Police don’t have a set date for when they will start moving into the building.
The district has 128 commissioned officers, 9 civilian employees in traffic, 44 sworn officers and 3 civilian employees, according to Amsler.
