The 460th Civil Engineer Squadron wants to remind you that from March through the beginning of November, the probability of encountering snakes in this area increases exponentially. When snakes first appear after a long winter, they are primarily looking for a meal and then a mate. As temperatures increase during the spring through the end of summer, you may occasionally see snakes in your yard or during outdoor activities.

There are several snake safety tips that will help reduce the presence of snakes in your living or work area.  First, by eliminating the ideal conditions for a snake, you greatly reduce your chances of an encounter or a bite.

Tip 1: Keep grass cut short. Snakes love to lay in high grass, bushes and flower beds where they are often concealed from your view. Snakes also will take refuge in prairie dog holes.

Tip 2: Never leave food sitting out. Small animals such as rats, birds and squirrels are attracted to food. Since snakes pray on small animals and there is a good chance they will follow them to their feeding ground.

Tip 3: Do not keep materials piled up outside. Wood and brick piles make great hiding places for snakes. Also, piles of leaves or other debris from the worksite can make a great home for a snake.

Tip 4: If you see a snake, back up slowly and immediately call 460 CES customer service at 720-847-9913.  If you live in base housing, call Buckley Family Housing Office at 888-464-8586 or maintenance at 303-340-0066.

Tip 5: If you or someone is bitten by a snake, call for medical attention immediately by dialing 911 or 847-9929.

Three of the most common snakes found on Buckley AFB are the rattlesnake, bull snake and garter snake. Remember, the rattlesnake is the only poisonous venomous snake listed, but you should keep your distance from any snake you may stumble upon. Stay safe and informed Team Buckley!
