AURORA | Two men were shot in northwest Aurora Tuesday afternoon, prompting police to lock-down a handful of area schools and canvass the neighborhood looking for suspects and victims.

Police were called to the 1900 block of Beeler street at about 3:15 p.m. on multiple reports of gunfire.

When police arrived, they found blood, but no victim. A short time later, a man who police broadcast was shot twice in the abdomen was found in or near a black Chrysler 300 at 51 Newark Street. That man was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Police later said the man, whom they did not identify, is in critical condition.

A short time after that, police were called from St. Joseph’s hospital in Denver. A man went there with non-life-threatening gun wounds, and is in good condition. Police said he was later transferred to Denver General Hospital.

During the afternoon, police and the Aurora SWAT team combed the area of Beeler Street and Montview Boulevard, going door-to-door looking for witnesses, possibly other victims and suspects. During that time, several nearby schools were placed on lockdown, some for a few hours.

Police are still trying to sort out the shooting, and they are still looking for others to question.

“We believe that there may have been additional parties that may have been involved in the incident that have not yet been identified,” said police spokeswoman Officer Diana Cooley.

The Major Crime Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Investigators are on scene and took over the investigation.
