DENVER | Parents could be able buy alcohol for their children at Colorado bars and restaurants if they were 18 and older but not 21 yet, under a proposal by a Republican lawmaker.
Sen. Greg Brophy is introducing the bill for the legislative session that begins Wednesday. He says he thought of the proposal because he and his wife recently took their daughter to dinner to celebrate her 20th birthday, and she couldn’t have a drink with them.
Brophy says he also wants parents of returning servicemen to be able to buy their children drinks at bars or restaurants.
He says the bill would allow parents to buy their adult children drinks in any place that allows on-premise alcohol consumption. Wisconsin has a similar law.
What a great idea, a hypothesis that should be expanded; parents should be able to teach this children how to drive as soon as the kids legs are long enough to reach the break and accelerator in case of an emergency, parents should be able to teach their children how to smoke pot so they can do it responsibly, parents should be able to teach their children to shoot a gun as soon as they are strong enough to pull the trigger so the kids can hunt for food and protect themselves.
Everyone understands that father or mother knows best, it is only that nasty government interference that hinders our safety, our independence, our right to do what is best for us and limits out right “because of the collective good.”
We have got to stop electing IDIOTS. This is as stupid idea as legalizing pot and thinking there wont be a problem.
I support this idea. Having been in law enforcement for over 30 years I have seen a lot. Yes, stupidity abounds, but there is also reason and sanity. Why do we as a country allow our 18 year olds to vote, to join the military, to go to war, to be treated as an adult in the courts,,, yet they can’t be trusted to handle alcohol??? That just makes no sense and it never has. Until MADD got involved, each state could set their own laws as it applied to drinking ages. Then the Feds had to step in and threaten the individual states with the loss of their highway funding if they didn’t raise their drinking ages to 21. Again, it’s another example of Big Brother sticking their nose in a situation that doesn’t belong. If we base the idea on the fact that people under 21 can’t handle their alcohol then we need to go back to Prohibition, because there are just as many idiot 30, 40 and 50 year olds imbibing and doing just as many stupid things after they have been drinking. If you want to keep kids from being stupid with alcohol, then don’t make it such a forbidden thing and take the onus off the magic 21…..
I have been to Europe, Mexico and to the Cayman Islands. In all of those places the legal age to drink was 18 (at least the places I visited). I did not see outrageous behavior by those 18-20 year olds that were drinking. In fact, it was just the opposite. It seemed they had a good handle on it and treated it with the proper respect it deserves.
What makes the difference between a person who is 20 years and 355 days old and that of someone who is 21 years and 2 days…?? The 21 year old is going to overindulge because we set it up in our society that this is the thing to do. You finally reach 21 and have to Binge.
If we allow our children to drink in our home and control it, why shouldn’t we be allowed to do the same in a restaurant? The consequences for inappropriate behavior (disorderly, DUI, etc) still apply regardless of your age.
