AURORA | With the bulk of election results tabulated, but still several thousand votes out in Arapahoe County, incumbent Councilman Bob LeGare and challenger Angela Lawson appear to have a solid, stable lead in the at-large race for two seats.

Just behind those two are incumbent at-large city councilwoman Debi Hunter Holen.

In ward races, winners at 10 p.m. appeared to be Bob Roth for Ward V, with a secure lead, former City Attorney Charlie Richardson, also with a sizable and apparently unyielding lead for Ward IV, and Francoise Bergen, who’s lead for Ward VI wasn’t shaken all night.

Mayor Steve Hogan is unopposed in his bid for a second term, but there are contested races for all fives seats up for election this year on Aurora City Council.

Four candidates are vying for Aurora’s two open at-large city council seats in the November municipal election. Incumbent at-large council members Bob LeGare and Debi Hunter Holen are seeking re-election. Angela Lawson and Maya Wheeler, who both ran for an at-large seat in 2013, are also running.

Bob LeGare, who is in the lead for an at large seat, said the personal attacks against him  by the Aurora Police Association (APA) and the Aurora Firefighters Local 1290 may have actually helped his campaign.

“The feedback I got was that people were disgusted by it,” he said.

Angela Lawson, who follows LeGare in votes for an at-large seat said at the Aurora Municipal Center Tuesday night that her impending victory felt “surreal.” Lawson also ran for the seat in 2013 and lost.

“This time I had a lot of support and and endorsements,” she said of this camapaign.

Wheeler, who also ran last year and lost, said losing this year would likely mean the end for her council runs.

“I’ll stay involved on (city) boards and commissions,” she said.

Two candidates are vying for Aurora’s Ward IV seat, which is due to be vacated by term-limited Councilwoman Molly Markert at the end of her term. Charlie Richardson is a familiar face at City Hall, while longtime resident Joe Lewis is a newcomer running for office.

Richardson  said he was glad his decades working as Aurora’s city attorney seemed to help his campaign.

“I’m very gratified that the citizens of Ward IV determined my past experiences with the city were a positive and not a negative as was suggested by some during my campaign,” he said.  [table “49” not found /]

In the race for City Council’s Ward V, voters will see one familiar name and two newcomers on the ballot. Incumbent Bob Roth, who has served as the ward’s city councilman since he was appointed in 2009, will be the familiar face. Livia Payne and Cheri McElhiney, both first-time city council candidates, are challenging Roth for the seat.

Roth said he was pleased to be in the lead for the race and looked forward to serving another term on city council for the ward.

Payne said though she lost seat that it was easier than she had expected it to be, and that the experience has not deterred her from considering a run in the future. [table “50” not found /]

Three candidates have filed to run in the race to replace longtime incumbent Ward VI Councilman Bob Broom, who is term limited: Francoise Bergan, Brian Arnold and PK Kaiser.

Bergan, who is in the lead, said she was “overwhelmed with joy” aobut the results.

Arnold, said a loss this year would not mean the end for him.

“There are a lot of ways to make an impact without being on city council. It makes me more determined to come back,” he said.  [table “51” not found /]

  1. Congratulations to Bob LeGare … as of tomorrow, all those negative ‘NO’ signs against LeGare are nothing more than yesterday’s trash.

    1. Like what Joe? Reduce it? They are stretched to the limit now….we need more of these officers. Agreed?

  2. Congrats to the winners. That’s a lot of Republican councilmembers, let’s hope they are conservative.

    1. better hope not or our infrastructure will continue to crumble till we look like INDIA!! and discrimination will be the norm…..not what I want.

    2. City council is now Republican (and we are supposed to have a non-partisan council!). . I shudder to think of what the next 4 years hold

      1. It is non-partisan in the sense that they do not identify or run on a party platform or membership. However, each is registered in one party or another, a fact which is easy to find online.
If they govern as Conservatives, not just “Republicans”, we are likely to see more empowerment of individuals, greater economic growth, enhanced personal freedoms, an emphasis on personal and government responsibility, fiscal restraint, dedication to rule of law and order, and less of the idea that government – at any level – is a problem solver.
        Let us hope so.

          1. You did not explain your position in point of fact all you did was rattle off some Confederate white horse Fantasyland nonsense.

      2. I agree. The last thing we need Is lRepubliCANTs in charge. Ugh. I v but they sure enough did not get enough people out in our neighborhood in North Aurora where we primarily vote Democratic. Most of the people in my neighborhood usually walk to the polls so I’m not sure that many of the people in my area even voted. I’m pretty sure the Republicans counted on it. They were absolutely no places to drop off Ballots in our neighborhood. I don’t prefer this mail in ballot situation. Although I drive, many do not.

        1. That doesn’t make sense. As cammy38 pointed out, it’s a non-partisan election, so there aren’t party-led voting efforts anywhere in the city. A person is allowed to drop off up to 10 ballots, so anyone could drop off ballots for shut-ins.
The city has a pretty decent electoral system, so any particular failings would not be the fault of a party and best addressed with the City Elections group.

    3. I hope not. I own a home in this town, but I moved my business out of it when it started being so conservative. My business is in Denver my home is in Aurora and I prefer a much more liberal government.
