AURORA | Three juvenile boys accused of trying to explode a pipe bomb at Mrachek Middle School in Aurora are facing trespassing and reckless kindling charges in connection with the bomb, which was never set off.
School officials found the bomb around the time school started Aug. 11 and evacuated the school. Administrators cancelled classes for the rest of the day but classes resumed the following day.
Three juveniles were captured on school security video tape trying to explode the bomb some time over the weekend, prompting investigators to ask for the public’s help in identifying the boys,
Even though police and firefighters widely circulated the photos, which led to their arrests, they are now not identifying the boys because of their ages. Aurora fire officials said the trio did not attend Mrachek.
Investigators said the trio set the bomb on fire, but it never detonated.
Investigators searched the building after finding the bomb, but said they didn’t find any other devices.
Police were offering a reward of $500 for information about the suspects, but officials didn’t say if the boys’ arrests were the result of a tip.
The teens were charged in Aurora Municipal Court.
