AURORA | Three motorcycle crashes in three days — two of them fatal — are prompting Aurora police to remind riders capitalizing on the warm weather to stay smart.
Aurora police Lt. Michael McClelland said the three accidents, all of which were partially caused by excessive speed, resulted from “poor decision-making on the part of their operators.”
On Sunday, a motorcycle traveling east on East Iliff Avenue struck a car turning onto another street, killing the motorcycle’s rider and injuring others in the car. Shortly after the first crash on Sunday, a second motorcycle traveling near the scene of the first accident, hit a car in traffic, injuring the motorcycle rider. McClelland said police suspect alcohol intoxication may have contributed to that crash.
On Tuesday morning, police said they found a man who had crashed his motorcycle in a parking lot near Smith Road and Peoria Street. Police say they suspect the man was speeding in the parking lot before losing control of his motorcycle, sliding and hitting the curb. The man was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived on scene.
McClelland said police are reminding riders to remember the basics during the warm-weather period: Slow down, wear a helmet, be aware on the road and look twice, avoid distractions, stay sober and keep enough room between the motorcycle and the cars around.
Has the name of the man killed on Sunday been released? We were witnesses and tried to help calm him until help arrived. He stopped breathing while we were on the line with 911. Would like to be able to send condolences to his family.
