The Aurora Public Schools Board of Education is encouraging community members to sound off on the 2012-13 budget before its approval later this summer.

During the board’s regular meeting on May 1, district officials offered preliminary input about next year’s budget, a total that will be impacted by an estimated gap of $4 million to $5 million between revenues and expenditures. That gap comes on top of a total of about $80 million in budget cuts in the past four years. The board’s meeting on June 5 will include a presentation of the district’s adopted budget, and APS Board President Mary Lewis encouraged parents, teachers, staff and community members to attend and give input about the process.

The meeting on June 5 will take place at 6 p.m. at the district’s Professional Learning and Conference Center, 15771 E. 1st Ave. in Aurora.

In surveys distributed to district staff and parents, potential budget cutting measures for the coming year have included everything from keeping the district’s reserve funds low to implementing furlough days. The board will vote on an adopted budget during its meeting on June 19.
