AURORA | Colorado voters said “yes” to a largely symbolic measure opposing the influence money has on American politics.
Amendment 65 was sailing toward passage based on early returns, with 72 percent of voters in favor.
The nonbinding measure that would tell the state Legislature to voice its support for an amendment to the United States Constitution allowing Congress and the states to limit political fundraising and spending. It would also tell the state Legislature to ratify such an amendment if it ever comes before them.
Based on early statewide returns, more than 903,000 people voted in favor of the measure, while just 346,000 said no.
Supporters said the plan is necessary because the current system gives too much influence in elections to the very wealthy.
But opponents said that the measure would not have any practical effect because it couldn’t force elected officials to vote in any particular way.
