Majestic Commercenter in Aurora.

AURORA |Amazon is planning a 450,000-square-foot warehouse for Aurora, economic development officials confirmed Monday, April 25.

Wendy Mitchell, executive director of the Aurora Economic Development Council, said the warehouse will be a 452,000-square-foot “sortation facility” at 19799 East 36th Drive in Majestic Commercenter.

The project will employ hundreds, she said.

“Aurora’s location, workforce and business-friendly environment were key ingredients in attracting in the world’s largest e-commerce retailer to our city,” she said in a statement.

Amazon has posted job listings for the site online, though it remains unclear exactly when the facility will open.

Ashley Robinson, a spokeswoman for Amazon, said there is no timeline for when the facility will open, but she said the company hopes to “move quickly.” Hiring for the Aurora warehouse has already begun, she said.

According to a 2014 story in the Seattle Times, sealed packages are delivered to regional sortation facilities and then sent off to nearby post offices, a step that allows the online mega-retailer to speed up delivery.

The closest sortation center Amazon operates today is in Phoenix, Ariz., Robinson said.
