Grimm faces Douglas in re-election test
By COURTNEY OAKES, Staff Writer
The race for Adams County Treasurer went down to the wire four years ago, but Republican incumbent Brigitte Grimm hopes that’s not the case again in 2014.
Riding a strong wave for Republicans at the county level in 2010, Grimm unseated Democrat Diane Christner by a mere 2,000 votes in an election and she faces a Democratic challenger, Steve Douglas, in her hopes for another four-year term in the office.
The Adams County Treasurer’s office receives all revenues belonging to the County and proceeds with all activity required to complete the property tax collection process, including mailing of Property Tax notices. Among a variety of other duties, the office also distributes monies to the county school districts.
“We have spent the past four years rebuilding the trust of our citizens and restoring the integrity of this office,” said Grimm, who has lived in the county for nearly 20 years, and holds an MBA in Accounting and Finance as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Systems.
“My team and I have worked very hard to build a collaborative effort with a unified vision,” she added.
Grimm touted that the Treasurer’s office — which has 10 employees — reduced operating expenditures by more than $250,000 per year, dramatically improved its Internet presence and made available the option of electronic tax notices that could save the county significantly in paper and postage. She also lauds expanded office hours that allow customers 7.5 more hours per week to complete their business.
Grimm has plans for another term if she’s able to avoid the fate of the past incumbent and win reelection.
“My projects for the next four years include working closely with new and existing businesses to identify their challenges of business personal property taxes,” she said. “We will continue with our mission to create a “Welcome to Adams County” packet for new homeowners addressing all tax questions commonly found when buying or building a new home. We will also move forward with our efforts to open satellite offices in addition to keeping expenses minimized, resulting in a savings of $1 million every four years. Finally, as always, technological solutions are also part of our strategy in the next four years.”
Douglas — a manager at King Soopers for the last 37 years — won his bid for an at-large seat on the Commerce City Council in 2009, in his third campaign, and is about to complete his first term. In seeking a spot on the ballot for Adams County Treasurer, he defeated Alexander Villagran by a wide margin in the June Democratic primary.
He didn’t return messages seeking comment, but according to a post on his campaign Facebook page, Douglas believes his experience with the Commerce City Council has prepared him so he knows “what it takes to get elected and I definitely understand the real demands of serving in office after getting elected.”
Douglas touts his available to the community as one of his strong suits and he vows to be responsible with taxpayers’ money if he is elected.
“I promise to be a good steward for all of the people of Adams County in looking after your hard earned money in making sure that your tax contributions are used wisely as an investment in the way we live as a community, both for today and for our future,” Douglas said.

I posted yesterday and it was inexplicably removed? According to this article, Brigitte Grimm has an MBA in finance and accounting, a business degree, and four years experience in the treasurers office managing and decreasing the budget over ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Her opponent bags groceries for a living, has no degrees, OR experience handling any type of budget, yet he wants to manage over $500 million in tax revenue?!?!? Seriously?!?! Not only that, but this wuss won’t even show up at a candidate forum to debate or answer questions on how he would manage the treasurer’s office. C’mon people! Be SMART! Vote Brigitte!!! (We’ll see how long it takes the Sentinel to remove this post now… start counting Sunday 10/19 at 8:50pm) In 3 – 2 – 1…
Your comment was removed because you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about and you’re very unprofessional on how you word things. You’re simply going off according to this article. Steve Douglas has a lot of experience with politics and in my opinion just a good person for the people. The way you write you don’t know anything about these candidates and probably just vote a particular party without any knowledge. Your comment should be deleted and there’s a reason why.
I’m happy to see the post was not removed. The comments below are true! Brigette has never met her oponent becuase he has refused to come to any forums or debates. Adams County deserves a Treasurer who can do the job. BRIGETTE GRIMM must be re-elected. She kept her promises to us, that alone makes her differant than any politician running.
