AURORA | A glance at some of the top contests in Aurora prep sports from April 19-25 in order by date:
• The Smoky Hill girls soccer team is in prime playoff position in the Centennial League, but the Buffaloes can do themselves a big seeding favor if they are able to win a 7:30 p.m. April 20 contest against league unbeaten Arapahoe at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.
• The Hinkley boys swim team travels to Pueblo Central High School for the annual Hornet Invitational, which runs April 20-21. Closer to home, Regis Jesuit plays host to the Jay Struckhoff Invitational — on April 21, with Fairview, Heritage and Mullen visiting the Raiders’ bubble (7:45 a.m. diving, 10:10 a.m. timed swim finals).
• The 56th Robert F. Caviness Track & Field Invitational — the longest running track meet in Colorado named for the late Bob Caviness, a former Aurora Central and Hinkley coach — is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. April 21 at APS Stadium, with a field that includes Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley, Rangeview and VISTA Peak). Other Aurora teams are at the Dakota Ridge, Patriot, Ray Campbell (Ftn.-Ft. Carson) and Rock Canyon invitationals.
• A major boys lacrosse showdown is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 23 when Arapahoe visits Regis Jesuit in a battle of hot teams. The Warriors are unbeaten and the Raiders recently had an 11-game winning streak. Regis Jesuit lost to rival Mullen on April 16 and has a tough stretch that also includes visits to Kent Denver (April 25) and Cherry Creek (April 27).
• The Regis Jesuit baseball team took an eight-game winning streak into a tough week that includes a trip to Ponderosa for a 4 p.m. contest on April 25 in a pivotal Continental League game. The Mustangs won 6-2 last season.
