Wrestling: Coronado tops Regis Jesuit to take Grandview Duals title, host Wolves third

AURORA | City teams claimed four of the top six spots on Saturday at the Grandview Duals wrestling tournament.

With more depth than its had in several seasons, Regis Jesuit posted one of its best-ever finishes at the annual tournament, as the Raiders went toe-to-toe with powerhouse Coronado before falling 44-27 in the championship dual.

Regis Jesuit — which finished 4-1 on the day — was paced by undefeated senior 220-pounder Grant Neal, who didn’t lose a match and was voted most outstanding wrestler in the upper weights. Donovan and Logan Ronan, at 138 and 145 pounds, respectively, also had big days for the Raiders.

Coach Rick Schultz’s Regis Jesuit team had to give Coronado 18 points due to forfeits and there was a double forfeit at 170 pounds.

Host Grandview claimed third place with a 44-31 victory over Adams City in a dual that got as close as one point late.

The Wolves, who saw senior 138-pounder Seth Brown go 4-1 on the day, finished 4-1 overall, with their only loss coming to Coronado.

Sophomore 113-pounder Xavier Cardenas received two forfeit wins, but won by pin in the three matches he did wrestle for the Wolves, while Armando Santillan at 120 pounds also won all three matches he got on the mat for plus two forfeits.

An all-Aurora confrontation decided fifth place, as Rangeview downed Smoky Hill 51-27.

The victory ended the Raiders’ day at 3-2, while Smoky Hill ended 2-3.

Denver East, Lakewood, Mead and Centaurus rounded out the tournament field.
