DENVER | For the first time in several years, at least one wrestler from an Aurora school won’t vie for a championship at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament.

But it still could be one of the most successful years for the city in terms of placers if things go well in the consolation rounds at noon Saturday, which kick off the final day of the three-day tournament at the Pepsi Center.

Grandview senior Seth Brown (145 pounds), Aurora Central senior Juan Fraire (182 pounds) and Rangeview sophomore Max Gonzales (220 pounds) all lost in semifinal matches on Friday night, but are assured a yet-to-be-determined spot in the top six of their respective weights.

Seven other city wrestlers — Regis Jesuit’s Donovan (145) and Logan Ronan (152), Cherokee Trail’s Zeke Silva (170), Eaglecrest’s Jake Dugan (152), Grandview’s Josh Vigil-Harrison (285), Hinkley’s Rafael Garibay (120) and Rangeview’s Sam Maes (160) — also remained alive through the second round of the consolation portion of the tournament, needing one more win to grab their own spot in the placing rounds.

Pomona’s Deyaun Trueblood, who won the 152-pound state championship last season while at Gateway, has a chance for another title this season as he is in the 170-pound title match.
