AURORA | Conrad Parra’s Aurora Central wrestling team has taken its lumps the past two seasons at the Aurora Public Schools Championships quad meet since winning the inaugural event in 2012.

The Trojans handled Gateway, Hinkley and Rangeview in the round-robin dual tournament Wednesday evening at Gateway High School to claim district bragging rights for the year.

The deciding match came in the middle round of duals when Parra’s Aurora Central team faced off with coach Tim Corby’s Rangeview team after both posted convincing opening victories against Gateway and Hinkley, respectively.

Returning Class 5A state qualifiers Kipp Corby and Deron Solomon posted consecutive pins at 138 and 145 pounds to put the Raiders out in front in the dual, but the Trojans slowly worked their way back into it. A big swing came in the upper weights, when Aurora Central 182-pounder Juan Fraire beat the clock in the first period to pin Rangeview’s AJ Thomas in 1:55 and Trojans’ 195-pounder Jevin Jordan won by forfeit to tie the match at 24-24.

Rangeview standout Max Gonzales received a win by forfeit at 220 pounds as Parra moved up first-year wrestler Elias Arietta into the heavyweight spot. The move worked out perfectly for the Trojans, as Arietta pinned the Raiders’ Humberto Caloca in the third period for an unexpected six points.

Some unexpected shuffling in the lower weights also played out well for Aurora Central, as Quincy Moreno posted a major decision victory at 113 pounds, where Rangeview’s Dominic Wenger — another returning state qualifier — typically wrestlers. Wenger, who lost to Moreno in the championship match at the Rangeview Raider Classic a few weeks earlier, moved up to 120 pounds for the dual and got pinned by Aurora Central’s Guido Umogwaneza just before the second period ran out.

Umogwaneza’s pin pushed the Trojans ahead by two points and 126-pounder Jonnathan Quijada, Aurora Central’s only returning 5A state qualifier, sealed the win with a 12-2 major decision of Kahari Gordon. Yovanny Osuna capped the match off with a 4-0 decision over Tyler Shavalier in a match that wouldn’t have affected the team result.

The Trojans rolled past Gateway 61-3 in the opening round and sealed the perfect day by handling Hinkley 51-14.

Rangeview finished 2-1 with victories over Hinkley (53-21) and Gateway (71-12) as Corby won twice by pin and once by technical fall on a perfect day, 170-pounder Christian Calkins recorded two pins and received a forfeit, as did Gonzales, who spent just 1 minute, 35 seconds on the mat.
