Wrestling: 5A Region 2 at a glance

AURORA | Grandview is Aurora’s lone wolf at the Class 5A Region 2 wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at Coronado High School in Colorado Springs.

Coach Greg Maestas’ Wolves make up part of a 16-team field that also includes three teams ranked in the top 10 in On The Mat’s Feb. 14 rankings — No. 6 Pine Creek, No. 9 Grand Junction and No. 10 Fruita Monument.

Six wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes will place, but only the top four advance to the 5A state wrestling tournament Feb. 20-22 at the Pepsi Center.

Based on On The Mat rankings, the toughest weight classes to qualify in figure to be 120, 170 and 182 pounds, which each include at least six ranked wrestlers battling for four state spots.

Two wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their respective weights are in the field: Jacob Trujillo (160 pounds) of Grand Junction and Fruita Monument 195-pounder Jacob Seely.

Grandview: Maestas has 12 of the 14 weight classes filled, as Grandview will be without a wrestler the brackets at 113 and 132 pounds. Sophomores Xavier Cardenas at 120 pounds and heavyweight Josh Vigil-Harrison are returning 5A state qualifiers. Vigil-Harrison, who placed at 285 pounds last season as a freshman, is Grandview’s highest-ranked wrestler by On The Mat, as he comes into the tournament rated No. 4 with a 35-5 record. Cardenas (24-4) is No. 17 in the latest 120-pound rankings, but will need to perform well, as other wrestlers in the bracket are ranked higher. Senior Seth Brown (28-6) has had an outstanding season at 138 pounds and is ranked No. 6, second-best in the bracket behind No. 4 Isaac Rider of Grand Junction, as he seeks his first trip to state. Senior Ryan Parizotto (28-6) at 160 pounds and freshman A.J. Federico (26-10) are ranked No. 16 and No. 13, respectively, and should both be threats to advance in their brackets.
