Aurora Central, Overland, Rangeview and Smoky Hill join the host Cougars in the tough 15-team field, that also includes Pomona and Ponderosa, ranked No. 4 and No. 5 in 5A by On The Mat’s Feb. 14 rankings.

Six wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes will place, but only the top four advance to the 5A state wrestling tournament Feb. 20-22 at the Pepsi Center.

Based on On The Mat rankings, the toughest weight classes to qualify in figure to be 120, 160, 170 and 182 pounds, which all include at least six wrestlers battling for four state spots.

Three wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their respective weights are in the field: Tomas Gutierrez (106 pounds) and Josh Rosales (120 pounds) of Pomona and Ponderosa 182-pounder Dylan Gabel.

Aurora Central: Coach Conrad Parra has wrestlers entered in 12 of the 14 weight classes, missing only entries at 170 and 220 pounds. Senior 182-pounder Trayvone Crosby (22-7) and senior 138-pounder Abe Bereras (27-11) are the Trojans’ lone ranked wrestling coming into the tournament, rated No. 18 and No. 23, respectively, by On The Mat. Aurora Central has a change to do well in the lighter weights, as sophomore Jonnathan Quijada (19-9) at 126 pounds, freshman Yovanny Osuna (22-8) and Bereras at 138 pounds have favorable chances to make the top four.

Cherokee Trail: Coach Jeff Buck has all 14 weights filled with a group that includes one returning 5A state qualifier in senior Harley Korte, who is ranked No. 3 by On The Mat at 160 pounds. Korte is the second-highest ranked wrestler in his weight and could face off against No. 2 Karl Briedenbach of Columbine in the championship match. Cherokee Trail has four other ranked wrestlers: Junior Danny Constant (32-2) is ranked No. 7 at 106 pounds, sophomore Michael Thelen (36-4) is ranked No. 7 at 152 pounds, senior Alex Alarcon (25-11) and junior Quincy Starling (31-8) is ranked No. 9 at 285 pounds and could all advance to state if rankings hold.

Overland: Coach Bert Dalton graduated two state placers from last season and has wrestlers entered in just five of the 14 weight classes, none of whom are ranked. Senior Jacob Donahue has the team’s only winning record at 15-12, but has a tough road in a loaded 160-pound bracket.

Rangeview: Coach Tim Corby also has a full lineup of 14 wrestlers entered and all of them are in search of their first trip to the state tournament. Corby’s sophomore son, Kipp Corby (25-13), is ranked No. 20 at 132 pounds in a bracket with only three other ranked wrestlers and freshman Max Gonzales (19-9) is rated No. 14 and is one of three ranked Aurora wrestlers (including No. 13 Demarcus Curtis of Smoky Hill and Cherokee Trail’s Alex Alarcon at No. 15) in his weight class. Junior 152-pounder Sam Maes (28-8) has been ranked at points throughout the season and could be a factor in a tough bracket, while another freshman with potential, Deron Solomon (16-15), has a chance to be in the mix at 138 pounds.

Smoky Hill: Coach Jim Opperman — who also has 14 wrestlers entered — has the highest-ranked Aurora wrestler in the regional field in senior 220-pounder Dexter Bess, a returning state placer who is rated No. 2 in the weight in 5A by On The Mat. Bess leads a strong Buffs’ contingent in the upper weights, which includes senior Josiah Neumann (27-17), ranked No. 21 at 182 pounds, No. 13-ranked 195-pound senior Demarcus Curtis (35-7) and senior Chris Rogers (28-14), who has the No. 16 ranking. Senior Anfernee Bell (27-19) has a chance in a wide-open 138-pound bracket, while seniors Caleb Miller (19-17) and Evan Person (26-17) look to get through at 152 and 160 pounds, respectively.
