AURORA | The winter prep sports schedule officially opens on Wednesday, as teams in boys and girls basketball, girls swimming, wrestling and ice hockey are allowed to complete in regular season play.

The opening day slate includes three basketball games, two in Aurora, plus a swim meet.

In boys play, Eaglecrest plays host to defending Class 5A state champion Chaparral at 7 p.m., the same time the Regis Jesuit girls — who made the semifinals of last season’s 5A state tournament — welcome defending state runner-up Monarch into their gym.

The Regis Jesuit boys open the season at Columbine at 7 p.m.

In the pool, the Regis Jesuit girls team opens against Chaparral with a 4 p.m. dual meet. The Raiders won’t have star Missy Franklin with them against the Wolverines, but got the news Tuesday that the five-time Olympic medalist will swim a select few meets in addition to the 5A state meet with the team.

The Regis Jesuit ice hockey team is the lone defending champion from the winter season for Aurora teams, as coach Dan Woodley’s team claimed its third state title in the past five seasons with a 3-2 victory over Ralston Valley in March at Magness Arena on the University of Denver campus.
