MONDAY, JAN. 12: The Aurora Central girls swim team topped visiting Englewood 79-60 in a home dual meet with victories in six of the 11 contested events. Lizzett Mireles Dominguez won twice individually and swam legs of the winning 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relays, while Siobhan James and Berenice Guerrero Cuarenta also earned victories.
SATURDAY, JAN. 10: The Cherokee Trail boys basketball team went on the road for a huge non-league matchup with Northfield and came away with a 64-62 victory. Jordan Mitchell led the victorious Cougars with 15 points, while Caleb Jensen and London Moore added 14 apiece. …The Regis Jesuit girls basketball team got a tying hoop from Khloe Miller in the final seconds of regulation, then outscored rival Mullen 15-5 in overtime for a 57-47 home win. Molly Schimmer’s 18 points led the Raiders, who also got 16 from Izzy Davies plus 10 from Miller, who also blocked four shots. …Sorrelle Kamgang (14 points), Kendall Tracy (13), K’Dence Thomas (12) and Ava Chang (10) scored in double figures for the Grandview girls basketball team in a 61-34 home victory over Roosevelt. …A small contingent from the Grandview and Cherokee Trail boys wrestling teams competed at the rugged Doc Buchanan Invitational hosted by Clovis High School in California and a trio came away with top-eight places. Wolves’ JR Ortega secured third place in the 123-pound weight class, while teammate Gunner Lopez (168) and the Cougars’ Cooper Mathews (129) finished in eighth place in their respective classes. …The rest of the Grandview boys wrestling team finished in eighth place among 29 teams at the Arvada West Invitational, which also included Regis Jesuit (10th), Rangeview (16th) and Gateway (tied for 27th). Anthony Segura’s runner-up finish at 144 pounds led the Wolves, while Richard Avila (113) and Aidan Sullivan (215) for the Raiders were also runners-up. Rangeview’s top finish came from Biram Griffey, who was third at 285 pounds. …With 128.5 points, the Overland girls wrestling team secured the championship of the Raven Rumble hosted by Denver South High School. Safura Salu (135 pounds) and Dureti Abdulkadir (145) won championships and Jackelyne Torreblanca Oseguerra took second at 170 to pace the Trailblazers, while Amelia Bacon (125) and Khloe Yizar (235) won championships for the Bison — who also had runners-up in Maylin Morales (110), Journee Hibbler (135) and Maritza Morales (235) — and Mackenzie Johnson (140) took a title for 12th-place Smoky Hill. Aurora Central —16th in the final standings — had three placers, led by Dryllyne Joseph’s third place at 235 pounds, while Tremoni Scaggs (115) and Elisa Amezquita Lara (170) each took sixth. …Four members of the Eaglecrest girls wrestling team placed in the top five at the Vista Ridge Alpha Female Tournament. Jordan Heibult took third at 125 pounds to lead the way for the Raptors. …The Regis Jesuit girls swim team racked up 440 points at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center to win the championship of the Mustang Invitational hosted by Mountain Range High School. Elsa Osborne won an individual event for the Raiders, while she also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay with Ava Terella, Natalie Worden and Mia Staubli. Osborne also teamed with Lexi Stramel, Erica Mitsuoka and Marz Nystrom on the first place 200 freestyle relay, while Stramel, Nystrom, Terella and Zoe Larson concluded the meet with the 400 freestyle relay title.
FRIDAY, JAN. 9: The Rangeview boys basketball team played its first game in three weeks and shut out Grandview in the opening quarter and went on to a 63-40 victory in a local matchup. Only two players reached double figures in the game and both were from the Raiders in Marceles Duncan (17 points) and Anthony Andrew (11), while Devin Alexandre’s nine led the Wolves. …The Vanguard Classical East boys basketball team topped Aurora West College Prep Academy 66-42 in a game played at Ball Arena. …The William Smith boys basketball team won its third straight contest with a 52-50 defeat of Arvada. …The Cherokee Trail girls basketball team outscored Erie 14-7 in the fourth quarter on its way to a 48-45 road win. Milania Gutierrez had a team-high 16 points, while Karson Chaney added 11 and Hannah Hazim 10. …The Eaglecrest girls basketball team downed Pueblo West 66-34 on the road. …The Grandview ice hockey team got in the win column for the first time when Caelan Weeber scored an overtime goal for a 5-4 win over Pueblo County. Eliot Seguin had a goal and an assist and Linkin Alisasis made 28 saves. … Liam Corcoran, Jacob Keenan, Christopher Powell, Davis Ritter, Mitch Soderholm-Hudson, Brady Sullivan and Austin Tucker all scored goals for the Cherry Creek co-op ice hockey team in a 7-3 win over Ralston Valley. …Goals by Evan Michalik and Sam Wessel —both assisted by Andrew Brennick — helped the Regis Jesuit ice hockey team skate to a 2-2 tie with Valor Christian.
THURSDAY, JAN. 8: Caleb Jensen’s 18 points led the way for the Cherokee Trail boys basketball team in a 64-49 win over Vista PEAK Prep, while Christian Davis added 14 and Jordan Mitchell 14. …Eric Fiedler poured in 39 points for the Regis Jesuit boys basketball team — which also got nine from Anthony Lynett and Michael Price — in a 73-64 home win against Overland. Mehki McNeal led the ‘Blazers with 16 points, while Kymani Eason added 15 and Demetrius Lambert 10. …The Aurora Central boys basketball team outscored Montbello by eight points in the final quarter on its way to a 64-59 home victory. Deon Davis Jr.’s 19 points led the Trojans, who also got 15 from Alex Flores, 14 from Ual Yonas and 12 from Jonties Brewer. …Michaela Halton connected on two free throws in the final second of regulation to lift the Overland girls basketball team to a 43-41 home win over Kent Denver. Halton’s 26 points paced the Trailblazers, who got five apiece from Emma and Sasha Davis. …Kiarra Spellman accounted for 25 points, while Kennedy Spellman added 19 for the Eaglecrest girls basketball team in a 58-50 defeat of Vista PEAK Prep. Knakai Starks led the Bison with 17. …Ari Boyd scored 19 points, Leilani Gordon had 15 and Taylor Dirden 12 for the Smoky Hill girls basketball team in a 66-17 victory over Dakota Ridge. …Wins by fall from Mihret Shimels, Isabela Perez Perez and Rebekah Taylor helped the Overland girls wrestling team to a 66-18 Centennial League dual win over Arapahoe. …Emir Saliger won two events, while Felicity Meijer, Natalie Daum, Alivia Miller, Giavelle Salsig, Aria Clouse and Lilly Wilson plus diver Izzy Becker also took events as the Cherokee Trail girls swim team defeated Overland 142-23. …Ella Kozlowski and Paige Gust claimed first in two events apiece, while Molly Grobbel, Delaina Burgeson, Emma Ault, Allyson Porter and diver Baylei Polk supported a relay sweep as the Grandview girls swim team defeated Eaglecrest 141-45.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 7: Karson Chaney banked in a 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer to lift the Cherokee Trail girls basketball team in to a tie with Legend and the Cougars had a 12-2 edge over the Titans in overtime for a 71-61 victory. Aaliyah Broadus made six 3-pointers on her way to 27 points, while Milania Gutierrez (12) and Chanel Stovall (10) also reached double figures. …Celie Dengler scored 19 points and Molly Schimmer added 18 for the Regis Jesuit girls basketball team in its 69-53 win over Chatfiled. …The Grandview girls basketball team fell to Ralston Valley 67-53 despite Sorrelle Kamgang’s 23-point effort. …The Eaglecrest boys wrestling team topped Lakewood 53-21 with help from pins from Carter Johnson, Donavon Delbridge II, Blake Simpson, Britton Matejovsky, Tayte Tahja and Charles Swick. …The Vista PEAK Prep boys wrestling team defeated Arvada West 52-17 with wins by fall from Adrian Pacheco, Ian Bacon, Cole Redmond, Kelvin Marfo, Abraham Garcia and Kent Luft.
TUESDAY, JAN. 6: The Eaglecrest boys basketball team won the championship of the Raptor-Titan Classic with a 71-52 home win over Fountain-Fort Carson as Clayton Kalimba had a team-high 17 points. Demari Manns Davis added 12, while Jayden Bradley and Reece Brown chipped in 10 apiece. …The Aurora Central girls basketball team got 30 points from Jamaea Johnson-Gonzalez during a 74-9 win over Aurora West College Prep Academy, while Andena Torres added 17. …The Smoky Hill girls basketball team rolled to a 68-14 win at Gateway with the aid of 26 points from Ari Boyd along with 15 apiece from Taylor Dirden and Leilani Gordon. …The Vista PEAK Prep girls basketball team opened City League play with a 59-39 defeat of Denver South. …The Rangeview girls basketball team lost a 52-49 overtime contest at Rock Canyon in a game decided on a wild 3-pointer from the corner for the Jaguars.
