One unbeaten season at Regis Jesuit came to an end this week, while another continued.
Coach Ken Shaw’s Regis Jesuit boys basketball team streaked to 19-0, navigating a daunting non-league schedule without a blemish before digging into Continental League play.
That proved to be the Class 5A top-ranked Raiders’ undoing, as they suffered a 59-36 home loss to second-ranked ThunderRidge in a marquee matchup Feb. 10.
Regis Jesuit scored just two points in the second quarter to fall behind the talented Grizzlies and mustered just five points in the fourth quarter in the defeat.
Taylor Kallsen scored nine points and Tony Caseria eight for the Raiders, who suffered their worst loss since the 2008-09 season.
Meanwhile, coach Dan Woodley’s Regis Jesuit ice hockey team continued to stay perfect, moving to 16-0 with back-to-back victories over Lewis-Palmer (6-2 Feb. 6) and Resurrection Christian (7-1 Feb. 7).
The Raiders finish the season with their most daunting three-game stretch against Ralston Valley (Feb. 13), Cherry Creek (Feb. 20) and Mountain Vista (Feb. 21).
• Jack Venuto’s overtime goal netted the Cherry Creek co-op ice hockey team a huge 4-3 win over Air Academy on Feb. 9 at Sertich Ice Arena. Blake Yount (Smoky Hill), Sean DeKramer (Cherokee Trail) and Nick Chavez (Cherry Creek) also scored for the 14-2 Bruins.
• Grandview finished third and Smoky Hill fourth for the third straight season at the Centennial “A” League championships girls swim meet on Feb. 7 at Arapahoe High School. Junior Mia Wood claimed her second straight league title in the 200 yard individual medley for Aurora’s only event win.
• Gateway junior Jessica Mitchell won a third straigh league diving crown at the EMAC Championships girls swim meet Feb. 7 at Adams City High School. Mitchell came just 0.55 of a point away from the league record with her score of 377.75 points to hold off Hinkley’s Brooke Connelly. Rangeview finished an Aurora-best third as a team, followed by Gateway and Hinkley.
• Hinkley’s Serj Chavez (145 pounds), Aurora Central’s Juan Fraire (182 pounds) and Rangeview’s Max Gonzales (220 pounds) all won titles at the EMAC Championship wrestling tournament Feb. 7 at Westminster High School. Rangeview finished third as a team in the final tune-up before regionals.
• The Rangeview boys basketball team needed a frantic comeback to overcome Hinkley for an important 54-52 EMAC win Feb. 6. Tarren Storey-Way scored a team-high 14 points for the Raiders, who also got 13 from Elijah Reed and 11 from Tyrei Randall.
• The foul-plague Regis Jesuit girls basketball team dropped a 58-43 decision to visiting Highlands Ranch Feb. 6 in a battle of top-10 5A girls teams. Julia Drexelius scored 16 points to pace the Raiders.
