Courtney Browne’s first high school home run proved pivotal in the Grandview softball team’s bid to win the Centennial League championship.
The junior pitcher crushed a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning of a resumed game Oct. 2 at Eaglecrest, then picked up the final three outs of a 9-8 victory over the Raptors that essentially locked up the elusive league crown for the Wolves.
Grandview sewed up the crown with a 20-0 victory against Overland the next day.
• Joey Carlson, Fernando Chavez, Marcos Wolde, Rolando Delfin, Luis Sestones and Jesus Morales all scored goals as Rangeview ran past Aurora Central 6-0 for a key EMAC boys soccer victory Oct. 7 at APS Stadium.
• The Eaglecrest football team nearly knocked off top-ranked Valor Christian on Oct. 3, but the Raptors fell just short in a 23-21 defeat. Elijah Ross threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns with Peter Anderson collecting 183 of those yards and both scores for Eaglecrest. In another big football result, Grandview snapped a two-game losing streak to Cherokee Trail with a 21-12 victory Oct. 2.
• The Cherokee Trail and Grandview volleyball teams played to five sets for the second time in two weeks, with the Cougars finishing a sweep Oct. 2 with a 25-22, 20-25, 28-30, 25-18, 15-6 victory. Shannon Webb finished with 26 kills and Azyln Cassaday added 23 for Cherokee Trail, which overcame 32 kills from Grandview star Haley McLaren.
