AURORA | A look at the games, tournaments and happenings in Aurora prep sports from March 19-March 25, 2015:
• Grandview plays ThunderRidge at 11:30 a.m. March 19 at Coors Field as another Aurora baseball team gets its turn to play on the Colorado Rockies’ home field. Smoky Hill also plays the professional venue on March 21 with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch scheduled against Ralston Valley.
• The Grandview Invitational girls golf tournament is set for 11 a.m. on March 19 as the season finally begins to get back on track after multiple early weather delays. Wolves’ junior Morgan Sahm won last season’s tournament with a 76 and leads a Grandview team that won its opening tournament of the season. Also on tap for 11 a.m. March 19 is the first EMAC South tournament featuring Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley and Rangeview at Fitzsimons G.C.
• Cherokee Trail and Vista PEAK co-host the first annual Far East Invitational girls tennis tournament March 20-21 with a field that includes Hinkley, Rangeview and Smoky Hill among Aurora teams. Singles matches are scheduled to be played at Vista PEAK and doubles at Cherokee Trail.
• The annual Dick Rush Coaches Invitational boys swim meet is set for March 21, as most of the state’s best swimmers in multiple classifications convene at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center for an early preview of how things might play out at the end of the season. Eventual Class 5A state champion Regis Jesuit left the other 26 teams in its wake last season in winning the Coaches Invite, while Smoky Hill, Grandview & Cherokee Trail finished 5-6-7. Prelims are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with finals at 3 p.m.
• Following their meeting in the city championship meet, Aurora track teams spread out on March 20 to compete in a variety of different invitationals. Aurora Central, Gateway, Regis Jesuit and Vista PEAK are entered in the Runners Roost Invitational at French Field in Fort Collins, while Grandview, Overland and Smoky Hill make a shorter trip to compete in the SaberCat Invitational at Sports Authority Stadium in Parker.
• The Grandview boys lacrosse team plays host to ThunderRidge at 7 p.m. on March 23 at Legacy Stadium in a battle of teams off to strong starts. The Wolves and Grizzlies play the second game of a doubleheader following Cherokee Trail vs. Lakewood at 5:30 p.m.
• The Grandview girls soccer team plays host to Cherry Creek at 5:30 p.m. on March 24 at Legacy Stadium in an early battle of Centennial League hopefuls. Also on the pitch, Eaglecrest pays a 4:30 p.m. visit to George Washington and Overland plays host to Thomas Jefferson at 4:15 p.m.
