A look at some of the key games, tournaments and happenings in Aurora prep sports between March 13-March 19, 2014:
• The top-seeded Grandview and Regis Jesuit girls basketball teams play in the Class 5A state semifinals on March 13, with the defending champion Raiders up first with a 7 p.m. tip against Poudre at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. The Wolves seek their first-ever trip to the 5A state championship game when they face Fossil Ridge at 8:30 p.m. on the same floor on the University of Colorado campus. The semifinal winners square off for the 5A state title at 3 p.m. March 15.
• The Regis Jesuit baseball team opens its season with a 4:15 p.m. contest at Arapahoe on March 13 as new coach Matt Darr puts his team loaded with Division I signees on the diamond officially for the first time. The Raiders —ranked No. 3 in the first Associated Press Class 5A poll — play just twice in Colorado before heading to North Carolina for a national tournament.
• The Grandview girls soccer team plays Mountain Vista on March 13, as the Wolves take on the defending Class 5A state champion Golden Eagles on the Shea Stadium pitch at 4:30 p.m.
• The Overland boys basketball team plays in the Class 5A Final Four for the first time since 1990 on March 14, as coach Danny Fisher’s Trailblazers take on Denver East at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center in Boulder in the first of two semifinal games. The winner advances to the 5A state championship game at 8:30 p.m. March 15 against the winner of the other semifinal between undefeated Fossil Ridge and Mountain Vista.
• The Aurora City Championships track meet is slated for March 15 at Legacy Stadium, which is back in service after a two-year hiatus from meets to repair the track. The Cherokee Trail boys — the defending 5A state champions — and Regis Jesuit girls won last season’s city team titles. Running events are scheduled to become at 9 a.m. and field events begin at 9 a.m. and noon, with finals scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
• The Grandview baseball team makes its annual trip to play at Coors Field on March 19, when the Wolves take on defending Class 5A state champion ThunderRidge in a game scheduled to begin at noon on the home field of the Colorado Rockies. The Grizzlies held the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press’ first 5A poll of the year, while Grandview sits No. 5.
